Web news aggregators rise despite papers woes!

Here is a sample of some of the most interesting and accessible English-language sites that distribute news, and what makes them worth a visit. * Daylife's (http://www.daylife.com) reason for being is less about presenting news from many sources gathered on one website. Rather, it allows other news publishers aggregate news on their own sites, said partner and new media blogger Jeff Jarvis says. Nevertheless, the site exhorts readers to dig in, giving them photos, timelines and other accessories that Jarvis says provides "an analysis of the body of news." * Newser (http://www.newser.com), started by Vanity Fair media columnist Michael Wolff, tells readers that "You can't follow 100 news sources, but we can." Its hook is human editors who search for and present the news, similar to old-fashioned print newspaper editors. more from Reuters

Automate Tasks at Shutdown

Q: Windows offers the Startup folder, which lets you specify tasks or applications to execute at start-up or log-on. Is there an equivalent for shutdown or logoff? I would like to copy some files I update during the day to a network location before I log off and go home at night. A: You can find a variety of small utilities that will automate tasks at shutdown, but for a straightforward task like the one you've described, you really don't need them. Just create a simple batch file to copy the updated files and end it with a command that shuts down the computer. You just have to remember to end your session by launching this batch file rather than by tapping the power button or shutting down via the Start menu. More from PC Mag

Services Guide for Windows XP

What are services? By definition, it's a program that runs invisibly in the background. But can't the same thing be said for a number of programs that run in the background such as anti-virus programs? Yes, but the real difference is that services load and start running whether or not anyone logs into the computer, unlike a program that is launched from the Startup Folder under All Programs. There are two ways to view Services on your computer. The first is to use the MS Configuration Utility by typing msconfig.exe in the Run box accessed via the Start Menu, followed by clicking the Services tab. If you want a quick visual of which items are running or stopped, this is fine, but the information is limited. The preferred way to make changes to services is to launch services.msc from the Run option on the Start Menu. The Services window shown below will open. via The Elder Geek
