Everything you need to know about Windows 7

Microsoft has been developing Windows 7 under a shroud of secrecy worthy of Apple, and it's led to a rash of rumours and unfounded expectations. The vision for Windows 7 doesn't sound like a snappy marketing slogan yet. Even Mike Nash, the Vice President for Windows Product Management, doesn't have one. He says: "The things you do today on Windows, Windows 7 makes easier; and the things you always dreamed of doing [are made] possible." This time, a key concern for Microsoft in terms of design is the Windows user experience. To make this happen, there's been a bit of a re-shuffle; Sinofsky isn't the only person to move from the Office team to Windows. Julie Larson-Green, the person responsible for introducing the ribbon interface to Office 2007, is now Corporate Vice President of Program Management for the Windows Experience. A handful of accessories (including WordPad, Movie Maker and Paint) will get a version of the ribbon, but it's not the look of Of

How to Photograph the Moon

Image
Time to take out your camera: tonight's full moon in the Northern Hemisphere will be the biggest it's been in 15 years. Many people who try to photograph the moon fail because they set their cameras for a nighttime exposure. However, the moon is lit by sunlight, so the camera settings are the same as any photo taken in bright daylight. The following will help you in capturing the moon on film or digitally. Build an XP SP3 Recovery Disc

Image
Instead of fretting about the old recovery CD you lost (or perhaps never got), why not take a few minutes and make one of your own? Ideally, a recovery disc should act as a safety net should anything disagreeable happen to your PC's hard drive or its data. (Think crash, virus, spyware attack, driver corruption, and so on.) A good recovery disc allows you to reinstall Windows to fix a minor problem or rebuild your PC from scratch to recover from a major one. Here's the problem: Once you upgrade your XP installation to Service Pack 3, Windows won't ever allow you to install an older version (including earlier editions of XP) without either wiping the hard drive clean or installing to a different drive. The Warning Signs of a PC Infected with Malware

Many readers asked for more information on symptoms they should look for if they fear for their machines' security. Subscriber Leslie Kight asks the following question: "Great article. I'm curious, though: what makes Woody suspect his XP machine is infected by Mebroot? What symptoms did he see to raise that question?" Here's Woody's reply: "I kept getting weird virus warnings from AVG — viruses would appear, I would remove them, then they would reappear in different locations, or entirely different viruses would show up. AVG reported that the MBR [Master Boot Record] was being changed every time I rebooted, even when I did nothing. "I did a deep scan — first with AVG, then with NOD32 — to remove all the reported malware, but the viruses kept reappearing. Antirootkit scans turned up nothing. Then I couldn't connect to F-Secure's Web site, so I pulled the plug. "As I said in the article, I have no idea at all if it wa

The Complete Guide to Speeding Up Your PC's Startup

Image
By Gina Trapani You just hit the power button your PC, and now you've got enough time to brew a fresh pot of coffee for the entire office—because that's how long it takes for your computer to go from "on" to "ready to work." If your PC's bogged down by a bunch of programs that automatically start up when it does, it can take forever to get started every morning. Without a major hardware upgrade, there's not much you can do to cut the time it takes for Windows to actually boot—but you can trim and tweak the amount of time it takes for your desktop to get to a working state. Let's take a look at a few ways you can cut your Windows' desktop's loading times using built-in utilities and third-party tools. When you install a new piece of software on your computer these days, more often than not it will set a little bit of itself to start up automatically when your PC does, either to check for updates, make it seem faster, or just remind you tha

Productivity Blogs

Michael Sliwinski founder of Nozbe and editor of Productive Magazine has just released the first issue of Productive magazine and I have to say it looks fantastic.  There are 17 articles in the first issue and the one headlining the magazine is an Interview with David Allen by Oliver Starr.  The great thing about this professionally produced magazine is that it’s absolutely free to download. The magazine is in PDF format but looks like a professional magazine and it’s obvious that Michael and his team has put in a lot of time and effort into producing this.  It’s not your normal PDF download. LIFE Photo Archive available on Google Image Search

The Zapruder film of the Kennedy assassination; The Mansell Collection from London; Dahlstrom glass plates of New York and environs from the 1880s; and the entire works left to the collection from LIFE photographers Alfred Eisenstaedt, Gjon Mili, and Nina Leen. These are just some of the things you'll see in Google Image Search today. "We're excited to announce the availability of never-before-seen images from the LIFE photo archive. Create a Live-Booting XP CD or DVD

The creators of the previously mentioned , versatile CD/DVD burning tool CDBurnerXP have posted a guide in their forums to using the program to create a live-booting Windows XP (or 2000/2003) disc. It's a multi-step process that involves a lot of settings to tweak, but at the end you should have a Windows desktop that loads straight from the boot. If you're going to roll your own live-boot XP, you might want to get familiar with trimming it down to the bare essentials for faster loads, or slipstreaming your installation to avoid Windows Update nags that will, frankly, never go away. Help Distant Friends Fix Their PC Problems

The curse of being nerdy is that you're often called upon to help friends and family resolve their computer problems. Of course, as you've probably learned, trying to troubleshoot by phone is maddeningly difficult. It's so much easier when you can actually visit the problematic PC and work your magic directly. But until science invents Star Trek-style transporters, you'll have to rely on the next best thing: remote-control software. CrossLoop lets you take full control of another PC. Just click the Free Download button to download and install the small client app on your PC, then instruct the other person to do likewise. Next, he or she clicks the Share tab and reads you the access code listed there, which you type into the client at your end. Click Connect and presto: You're connected. Now you have total control of the other system, so you can find the missing file, install the antivirus software, figure out why the printer's not printing, or whatever. Free and

7 Top Tips and Resources for Google Chrome

Google introduced the beta version of its open source Chrome browser nearly two months ago, and issued its third update to the beta yesterday. (The update pushes to you automatically if you're running Chrome.) Although there are signs that the very early popularity of this browser has calmed down somewhat, it's still generating a lot of buzz, Google has confirmed that many extensions are coming for it, and I expect to see it in a mobile version very soon. If you're running Chrome, here are seven tips for customizing and getting the most out of it. Go here for more.

Manage Windows Services

Managing Windows services is a painless efforts because the Microsoft tool services.msc does a decent enough job. It provides an interface that is displaying all existing services, their status and enough options to change the status easily. But there is always room for improvement. System administrators for instance would love an option to save different service profiles or save profiles in an xml file to load them on different machines easily." more at ghacks :

75 (Really) Useful JavaScript Techniques

Developers and designers are using more and more JavaScript in modern designs. Sometimes this can be a hindrance to the user and take away from the simplicity of the design, and other times it can add greatly to the user’s experience. The key is a) adding the right amount of JavaScript, and b) using the right JavaScript techniques. We have already collected various JavaScript techniques in the past – now it’s time for a new portion of JavaScript. Thanks to the Web’s widespread adoption of JavaScript, JavaScript libraries have sprung up to help make design and development easier. Here are a few of the major JavaScript libraries that developers use: jQuery, Prototype, Scriptaculous, mootools, Dojo. These frameworks have thriving communities whose members have developed countless plug-ins that can greatly add to the JavaScript framework. However, sometimes we need JavaScript solutions that are a little more involved or specific. Here are 75 more handy JavaScript techniques that have made

Google Chrome

Chrome, a Google Browser. It was about time. I’m sure you have heard a lot about Google Chrome already. If you haven’t tried it yet, keep reading because I have tried it for you, and I will summarize everything you should be aware of. Alright, did we really need another browser? Maybe. Google’s approach was to analyze existing technology and then make it better. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? The comic strip that introduces the ideas and technology behind the browser states that developers started from scratch. The point was to create a browser compatible with the internet of today, rather than that of decades ago, when browsers were invented. Again, Google did not re-invent the wheel, but it may be pushing it forward a great deal. via makeuseof

Rather, it allows other news publishers aggregate news on their own sites, said partner and new media blogger Jeff Jarvis says. Automate Tasks at Shutdown

Q: Windows offers the Startup folder, which lets you specify tasks or applications to execute at start-up or log-on. Is there an equivalent for shutdown or logoff? I would like to copy some files I update during the day to a network location before I log off and go home at night. A: You can find a variety of small utilities that will automate tasks at shutdown, but for a straightforward task like the one you've described, you really don't need them. Just create a simple batch file to copy the updated files and end it with a command that shuts down the computer. You just have to remember to end your session by launching this batch file rather than by tapping the power button or shutting down via the Start menu. More from PC Mag

Services Guide for Windows XP

What are services? By definition, it's a program that runs invisibly in the background. But can't the same thing be said for a number of programs that run in the background such as anti-virus programs? Yes, but the real difference is that services load and start running whether or not anyone logs into the computer, unlike a program that is launched from the Startup Folder under All Programs. There are two ways to view Services on your computer. The first is to use the MS Configuration Utility by typing msconfig.exe in the Run box accessed via the Start Menu, followed by clicking the Services tab. If you want a quick visual of which items are running or stopped, this is fine, but the information is limited. The preferred way to make changes to services is to launch services.msc from the Run option on the Start Menu. The Services window shown below will open. via The Elder Geek

Computer Management Tools in My Computer

Russ Bartels has an interesting observation about giving XP the performance tools found in Vista: "Great job; however, you missed one that I have used for a long time. In Windows 2000 and XP, you can right-click My Computer and select Manage to see a great selection of these tools. This would be a good addition to your directory of niche tools." The Computer Management window brings together many Microsoft Management Console snap-in controls that would otherwise have to be launched individually. (These Microsoft controls can be recognized in the Windows System32 folder by their .msc extension.) This windows gives you access to a couple of tools that I recommended on Jan. 10. If you want to add Computer Management to your collection of tools, the executable file name to create a shortcut to is compmgmt.msc. Alternatively, you can open the Computer Management window by clicking Start, All Programs, Administrative Tools, Computer Management. If you don't see the Administrati

Don’t Reset!

Windows occasionally gets into a weird state where, well, things just stop working - the start menu doesn’t launch some apps anymore, clicking links in Internet Explorer doesn’t work, context menus stop working, etc.* Instead of rebooting Windows to get things working again, try logging out and logging back in. When Windows (and the apps that plug into the Windows shell) get into some weird state, you don’t need to reboot; a logoff shuts down the Windows Explorer, and a logon loads it again. This used to happen to me every now and again, but since SP1 It hasn’t happened once. Alternatively there is a much easier way to get your computer running smoothly again and remove all the idle processed. When this shortcut is run the system should stop for a few seconds as it reclaims RAM before speeding up again as you use it. Don

How to Manage Your Music

iTunes 7.6 Since its inception, iTunes has hidden the inner workings of its file management , preferring instead to present a single abstract "Library" to the user. This is fine if you like doing things the iTunes way, but it can be annoying if you prefer to organize things according to where all of your files actually reside on your hard drive. Fortunately, Apple gave in—partway—in Version 7.0, with support for multiple libraries. Hold down the Shift key (Windows) or Option key (OS X) as you start the program, and you'll see a graphic representation of the different libraries you have, along with an option to create a new one.
